An Overview of Corfu’s Philharmonic Societies

Corfu’s vibrant musical tradition is inextricably linked to its numerous Philharmonic Societies, with the three most prominent being the “Old” (Mantzaros), “New,” and “Capodistria” bands in Corfu Town. These societies are far more than just musical ensembles; they are pillars of Corfiot culture, playing a central role in island life for over a century, especially during religious festivals and national holidays. Rooted in Italian operatic and classical influences, these bands filled the void left by Venetian rule, fostering a deep love for music and civic pride. Experiencing a parade, a concert, or visiting one of their museums offers a unique insight into the island’s soul.

In-Depth Guide & Details

History of the Societies
The first Philharmonic Society, known as “Mantzaros” or “Old Philharmonic,” was founded in 1840. Its creation was a response to the British colonial authorities’ refusal to allow the local population to use the British military band for religious processions. This led to the formation of independent musical societies, which quickly became symbols of Corfiot and Greek cultural identity. The “New Philharmonic Society” (1890) and the “Capodistria Philharmonic Society” (1980) followed, each contributing uniquely to the island’s musical tapestry.
Role in Corfiot Life
The Philharmonic Societies are integral to Corfu’s social and cultural fabric. They provide free musical education to island youth, preserving traditional skills and fostering new talent. Beyond education, their public performances – from solemn religious processions during Easter to vibrant national holiday parades and summer concerts in the Spianada – are cherished events that draw large crowds and define the Corfiot experience. They are a proud expression of local identity and artistic excellence.
How to Experience Them
  • Easter Celebrations: If you visit during Orthodox Easter, witnessing the processions led by the various bands is an unforgettable experience, each society performing its unique repertoire.
  • Summer Concerts: Look out for announcements of free open-air concerts in the Spianada Square or other public spaces during the summer months.
  • Mantzaros Museum: The museum of the “Old” Philharmonic Society offers a dedicated insight into their history, instruments, and famous composers.
  • Chance Encounters: Sometimes, you might even hear a society rehearsing as you wander the streets of Corfu Town!
