Built as a summer refuge for the melancholic Empress Elisabeth ‘Sisi’ of Austria-Hungary, this magnificent neoclassical palace is a monument to her fascination with Greek mythology, particularly the hero Achilles. After her death, it was owned by Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany. A visit today is a journey into a world of imperial grandeur, with lavishly decorated rooms, breathtaking frescoes, and magnificent terraced gardens that boast stunning sea views and world-renowned statues.

What to See Inside

The palace and its grounds are filled with incredible art and history. Please note, that due to ongoing renovation work, the inside of the palace is currently closed, although the gardens remain open.

  • The Grand Staircase: The magnificent main staircase is flanked by impressive statues of Zeus and Hera and topped by a huge fresco depicting Achilles in his chariot.
  • The Gardens: The terraced gardens are a highlight, offering spectacular views over the Ionian Sea. They are adorned with statues of Greek gods and philosophers, including the famous Peristyle of the Muses.
  • The Dying Achilles: In the gardens, you’ll find Empress Sisi’s most cherished statue – a poignant marble sculpture of the dying hero Achilles pulling the arrow from his heel.
  • Achilles Victorious: Commissioned by Kaiser Wilhelm II, this colossal bronze statue of a triumphant Achilles stands in stark contrast to Sisi’s original, dominating the lower gardens.
