An Overview of Angelokastro

Angelokastro, or the ‘Castle of Angels’, is arguably the most impressive and important Byzantine castle in the Ionian Islands. Perched dramatically on a sheer, 305-meter-high cliff on the northwest coast, it served as the capital of Corfu during periods of great danger. Its strategic position meant it was never conquered, providing refuge for the local population. For visitors today, it offers a challenging but hugely rewarding climb into history, culminating in some of the most spectacular, awe-inspiring panoramic views in all of Greece.

In-Depth Guide & Details

Getting There & Location

The castle is located high above the coast, near the village of Krini and a short drive from Paleokastritsa.

  • By Car & Parking: Driving is the highly recommended way to visit. Follow the signs from the main road near Paleokastritsa up towards the village of Krini. The road is narrow and winding. At the end of the road, there is a small car park and a taverna. Parking is limited, so it can get full during peak times.
  • By Bus: Getting here by bus is challenging. The Green Bus service does not go directly to the castle. The nearest stop is in Krini village, from which it is a significant and steep downhill walk to the castle car park. A taxi from Paleokastritsa is a more viable alternative.

Tickets & Access
  • Tickets: A small entrance fee is required to enter the site, payable at a kiosk near the car park. Opening times may vary, pleas ensure that you check before visiting.
  • The Ascent: From the car park, you must climb a steep, winding stone path and a series of steps to reach the castle entrance. It is a 10-15 minute walk that requires a reasonable level of fitness.
What to See Inside

The ruins of Angelokastro are fascinating to explore.

  • The Main Gate: The fortified entrance gives you an immediate sense of the castle’s defensive power.
  • The Acropolis: At the very summit is the acropolis, containing the Church of the Archangel Michael and offering unbelievable 360-degree views over Paleokastritsa, Corfu Town, and the entire west coast.
  • Cave Chapel of Agia Kyriaki: The most unique feature. A tiny chapel built into a cave, containing 18th-century frescoes and rock-carved graves that were likely used by hermits.
  • Circular Tower & Cisterns: Explore the ruins of the main circular tower at the entrance and discover the large underground cisterns that ensured the castle had a water supply during sieges.
