How Will You Get Here?

Drive a Rental Car (Caution!)

A 4×4 or quad is ideal due to the rough dirt track. Standard cars should proceed with extreme caution and may need to park and walk the last section.

Buses are Not an Option

Due to its extremely remote location and unpaved access, Arkoudilas Monastery is not accessible by bus. A private vehicle is required.

Walk the Final Stretch

Many visitors choose to park their vehicle when the track gets too rough and enjoy a scenic 20-30 minute walk to the monastery.

Getting There & Location

This is an off-the-beaten-path destination for confident drivers and explorers.

  • By Car & Parking: A car, scooter, or preferably a quad bike/4×4 is essential. From the resort of Kavos, follow the road south. Past the ruins of an old monastery, the road turns into a long, bumpy dirt track. Standard hire cars should proceed with extreme caution. It is often best to park where the track becomes too rough and walk the rest of the way (20-30 mins).
  • By Bus: It is not possible to visit Arkoudilas Monastery by bus.

  • Tickets: Access to the monastery and its grounds is completely free.
  • The Walk: The final approach to the monastery is via the dirt track. The ground is uneven, so sturdy footwear is a must.

Important Things to Know…

  • The access track is very rough and unpaved. It is not suitable for nervous drivers or low-clearance cars.
  • There are absolutely NO facilities. Bring all your own water and supplies.
  • You will likely be completely alone. Let someone know where you are going.
  • Check your fuel before you leave Kavos; there are no petrol stations nearby.
