An Overview of Fort Vido

Just a short boat ride from Corfu’s Old Port lies the historic site of Fort Vido. Located on the small island of the same name, this was once a formidable British-built fortress designed as the northern defence for Corfu Town. Although the main fortifications were dismantled in 1864 as a condition of Corfu’s unification with Greece, its presence still defines the island. Today, a visit involves exploring the subtle ruins scattered across a peaceful nature reserve, intertwined with walking trails and the poignant Serbian Mausoleum, which stands as a powerful later monument on this historic ground.

In-Depth Guide & Details

Getting There & Location

The fortress grounds, which cover the entirety of Vido Island, are only accessible by a dedicated ferry service from Corfu Town.

  • By Car & Parking: You cannot take a car to Vido Island. The best option is to park in one of the paid car parks near the Old Port in Corfu Town and walk to the ferry departure point.
  • By Bus: Both Blue and Green bus services terminate in Corfu Town. From either San Rocco Square or the KTEL station, it is a 10-20 minute walk to the Old Port where the Vido ferry departs.
  • By Boat: This is the only way to reach the island. A small, regular ferry runs from the Old Port of Corfu Town (usually departing from the pier near the BP petrol station). The journey takes around 10 minutes.

Tickets & Access
  • Tickets: You purchase a return boat ticket from the kiosk or on the boat itself before departure. The island and fortress grounds are free to enter. Boats typically run every hour during the summer season, but always check the timetable at the port.
  • The Walk: From the jetty where the boat docks, a network of trails allows you to explore the grounds of the former fortress.
What to See Inside

The island is a place for historical exploration and quiet reflection.

  • Fortress Ruins: While the main structures were demolished, you can still find fascinating remnants of the original walls, stone jetties, old staircases, and gun emplacements as you walk the island’s scenic trails.
  • The Serbian Mausoleum: The most significant monument on the island. This impressive structure was built later to honour the thousands of Serbian soldiers who died here when the island served as a quarantine hospital during WWI.
  • Walking Trails: The paths on Vido take you through the grounds of the former fort, offering lovely views back towards Corfu Town and the Old Fortress.
  • Ipapanti Church: A small, picturesque church located on the island, often used for local events.
