An Overview of Lake Korission

Lake Korission is the largest lagoon in Corfu and a vital protected wetland, forming the heart of a stunning and wild coastal ecosystem. This vast expanse of saltwater is separated from the Ionian Sea by a narrow strip of land comprised of majestic sand dunes and a unique cedar (juniper) forest. As a designated Natura 2000 site, it is a haven for wildlife, most famously for the flocks of flamingos that visit seasonally. A trip to Lake Korission is an escape into raw, undeveloped nature, a world away from the busy resorts, offering endless opportunities for walking, birdwatching, and exploring some of Corfu’s most beautiful, untamed beaches.

In-Depth Guide & Details

Getting There & Location

The lake is a large natural area, not a single destination, and a car is essential for exploring it.

  • By Car & Parking: This is the only practical way to visit. You can access the area from several points. The main approaches are via the roads leading to Chalikounas Beach on the west side or Issos Beach on the south side. Parking is informal, usually along the dirt tracks that run parallel to the dunes and beaches.
  • By Bus: Visiting by bus is not recommended. The nearest Green Bus stops are in distant villages like Agios Georgios South or Argirades, from which it would be an extremely long walk to reach the prime areas of the lake.

Tickets & Access
  • Tickets: Lake Korission is a natural landscape and is completely free to access and explore at any time.
  • Access: The area is explored via a network of dirt tracks and sandy paths. A small wooden bridge connects the dunes near the main channel, allowing you to walk between Chalikounas and Issos.
What to See & Do: Key Highlights

The experience is all about immersing yourself in nature.

  • Birdwatching: The main draw for many. Look for Greater Flamingos (best seen in spring/autumn), egrets, cormorants, and over 120 other species of migratory birds that use the lagoon as a vital stopover.
  • The Cedar Forest: Explore the unique landscape of sand dunes covered with a rare forest of wild junipers and white sand lilies. A wooden footbridge offers a beautiful walk across the channel that connects the lake to the sea.
  • Chalikounas & Issos Beaches: Walk along the vast, wild, sandy beaches that form the barrier between the lake and the sea. Chalikounas is a famous spot for kitesurfing, while the dunes of Issos are spectacular at sunset.
