An Overview of Mouse Island

Pontikonisi, or ‘Mouse Island’, is the tiny, cypress-covered islet that forms the heart of Corfu’s most famous and photographed scene. Steeped in myth – legend says it is the petrified ship of Odysseus – this iconic landmark is crowned by a small, historic Byzantine chapel. While it is most often viewed from the mainland with the Vlacherna Monastery in the foreground, taking the short boat trip to set foot on the island itself offers a unique and peaceful experience, allowing you to explore its sacred chapel and enjoy a reverse view of the bustling world you just left behind.

In-Depth Guide & Details

Getting There & Location

To visit Mouse Island, you must first get to the causeway at Kanoni, just south of Corfu Town.

  • By Car & Parking: Driving from Corfu Town is quick (10 mins). There is limited parking at the top of the hill in Kanoni near the cafes, or you can drive down to the car park at the base of the causeway.
  • By Bus: The best option. The No. 2a Blue Bus (to Kanoni) runs very frequently from San Rocco Square in Corfu Town and terminates right at the top viewpoint.
  • By Foot: It’s a beautiful 30-40 minute coastal walk from Corfu Town’s Garitsa Bay, perfect for a leisurely stroll.

Tickets & Access to the Island
  • The Boat Trip: To visit Mouse Island itself, you must take one of the small boats that run constantly from the jetty next to the Vlacherna Monastery causeway.
  • Tickets: A small fee (usually just a few euros) is charged for the short return boat journey, which takes only a few minutes each way.
What to See & Do

The area offers several unique experiences centered around the island.

  • The Chapel of Pantokrator: The main reason to visit the island. Climb the white steps to this tiny but enchanting 11th-century Byzantine chapel, surrounded by towering cypress trees and often a resident peacock.
  • The Viewpoint: Before or after your boat trip, take in the world-famous view from the Kanoni causeway or the cafes above, perfectly framing Mouse Island behind the Vlacherna Monastery.
  • Plane Spotting: A major thrill of the location! The airport runway is directly adjacent to the causeway, and watching the planes land and take off just meters above your head is an unforgettable experience.
