Clinging to a verdant cliffside high above the beach once described by Lawrence Durrell as “perhaps the loveliest in the world,” the Myrtiotissa Monastery is a tranquil and secluded spiritual haven. This historic 14th-century monastery is named after the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary found in a myrtle bush nearby. It is a working male monastery, offering visitors a glimpse into a life of quiet devotion and providing an atmosphere of profound peace. The real reward for making the challenging journey here is the combination of authentic spirituality and the absolutely stunning, uninterrupted views over the wild Ionian Sea.

How Will You Get Here?

Drive a Rental Car (Carefully!)

The road down to the monastery is extremely steep and narrow. It’s recommended to park on the main road at the top and walk down.

Buses are Not Recommended

The nearest Green Bus stop is in Vatos village, which leaves a very long and hilly walk to the monastery. Not a practical option.

Walk the Steep Path

For a safer and more enjoyable experience, park at the top of the main road and walk the final 15-20 minutes down to the monastery.

In-Depth Guide & Details

Getting There & Location

The monastery is located down a very steep road on the west coast, between the villages of Vatos and Pelekas.

  • By Car & Parking: A car or scooter is the only way to get close. Crucially, the final road down is extremely steep, narrow, and often in poor condition. It is strongly recommended for most drivers to park on the main road at the top and walk the final 15-20 minutes down the concrete track. There is virtually no parking at the monastery itself.
  • By Bus: This is not a practical option. The nearest Green Bus stop is in Vatos village, from which it is a very long and hilly walk.

Tickets, Dress Code & Key Sights

Tickets & Access

  • Tickets: Entry to the monastery is free, though donations are very much appreciated for the upkeep of this historic site.

Dress Code:

  • This is a working monastery with a very strict dress code. Both men and women must have their shoulders and knees covered. Long trousers for men and long skirts or dresses for women are required. Wraps may be available, but it is best to arrive appropriately dressed to ensure entry.

What to See Inside: Key Highlights

The experience is one of peace, reverence, and natural beauty.

  • The Main Church (Katholikon): A small, intimate chapel dating from the 14th century, holding the revered “Myrtiotissa” icon of the Virgin Mary.
  • The Miraculous Icon: The heart of the monastery is the icon of the Panagia Myrtiotissa (Virgin of the Myrtles), which according to legend, was miraculously found by a shepherd in a burning myrtle bush.
  • The Breathtaking View: The monastery’s clifftop position provides one of the most spectacular, unspoiled sea views on the entire west coast of Corfu.
  • The Tranquil Atmosphere: Unlike more tourist-focused monasteries, Myrtiotissa offers a genuine sense of peace and spiritual solitude.
