An Overview of the New Fortress

The New Fortress (Neo Frourio) is a masterpiece of Venetian military architecture that looms over the Old Town’s north-western side. Built after the Old Fortress, it is a more complex and purely defensive structure, designed to protect the city from land-based attacks. For visitors, it offers a more rugged and adventurous experience, with a fascinating labyrinth of dark tunnels, stone ramparts, and hidden passages to explore, culminating in breathtaking, unique views over the tiled roofs of the town and the bustling new port.
