Agios Stefanos Avliotes

Agios Stefanos (Avliotes)

Overview

Agios Stefanos (Avliotes) is a spectacular, wide bay of golden sand on Corfu’s northwest coast, offering a wonderfully relaxed and family-friendly resort atmosphere. Its vast size ensures there is always plenty of space, while its sheltered position results in calm, shallow waters perfect for all ages. The beach seamlessly blends organised sections with amenities and quieter spots for those wanting more seclusion. It’s also the main departure point for boat trips to the beautiful Diapontia Islands.

Location

Located on the northwest coast, Agios Stefanos is approximately 45 km from Corfu Town, with the drive taking just over an hour. It sits between the popular resorts of Sidari and Arillas. It’s important not to confuse it with Agios Stefanos on the northeast coast; this one is often specified as being near Avliotes village.

Water Depth & Safety

  • The water is exceptionally shallow for a long way out, making it one of the safest and best beaches on the island for families with young children.
  • The seabed is soft, fine sand, perfect for paddling and playing.
  • Being in a protected bay, the sea is almost always calm with minimal waves.
  • Lifeguards are on duty in the main organised sections during the summer months.

Amenities

The resort is very well-equipped with everything needed for a perfect beach day. Along the beachfront and the road behind it, you’ll find:

  • Numerous options for sunbed and umbrella hire
  • Water sports, including paddleboards, kayaks, and boat rentals
  • A fantastic selection of beachfront tavernas, cafés, and bars
  • Mini-markets, souvenir shops, and shower/changing facilities
  • A small harbour at one end for boat excursions

Getting There – Parking, Accessibility & Transport

  • Parking: Free parking is available in designated area and along the roads behind the beach. Finding a space generally isn’t too difficult.
  • Accessibility: The beach is flat and easily accessible from the road, with no hills or stairs, making it ideal for pushchairs and those with mobility considerations.
  • Transport: The best way to visit is with a rental car. The A1 bus route from Corfu Town also serves Agios Stefanos directly.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Visiting

  • The “Other” Agios Stefanos: Be certain you are heading to the one in the northwest (Avliotes), not the harbour in the northeast, as they are over an hour apart.
  • Gateway to Diapontia: This is the perfect place to catch a ferry to the nearby islands of Erikoussa, Othoni, and Mathraki for a unique day trip.
  • Sunset Spot: Facing west, the beach offers truly spectacular sunsets.
  • Spacious: Don’t worry about crowds; the beach is so large you can always find a quiet spot by walking a little further along the sand.

Final Verdict

  • Best for: Families with children of all ages, couples seeking a relaxed resort vibe, and anyone wanting to explore the Diapontia Islands.
  • Best time to go: All day long. Stay until the evening to witness a magnificent sunset.
  • Crowds: Can be lively in the main sections during high season, but its sheer size means it never feels overwhelmed.
  • Extra perks: Stunning sunsets, exceptionally safe water for kids, and the unique opportunity for island-hopping.
