Glyfada Beach

Glyfada Beach 🟦

Overview

Glyfada Beach is one of Corfu’s treasures, and one of the most famous beaches on the island. It is a sandy haven embraced by turquoise waters and framed by luscious green hills. The beach is great for both those seeking relaxation and those seeking a more upbeat vibe. Whether you want to bask in the sun, swim in the crystal-clear waters, or enjoy a day at a beach bar, Glyfada offers a harmonious blend of serenity and excitement.

Location

Situated on Corfu’s western coast, Glyfada Beach is about 16 km west of Corfu Town and the island’s airport. The beach faces west and therefore provides uninterrupted views of the Ionian sea. The nearby village of Pelekas, situated a little further inland and high up in the hills, offers charming shops and tavernas within easy reach. The drive from Corfu Town takes roughly 30 minutes.

Water Depth & Safety

  • The water at Glyfada Beach remains shallow for a good distance, making it ideal for families and less experienced swimmers.
  • The clear waters are perfect for snorkelling, revealing a vibrant underwater world.
  • Lifeguards are typically on duty during the busy summer months, enhancing the sense of safety. However, it’s always important to stay cautious while swimming.

Amenities

Glyfada Beach is well-equipped for a comfortable visit. There are organized sections with sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, as well as free areas where you can lay your towel. Beachside tavernas serve fresh seafood and drinks, and facilities like toilets, showers, and changing rooms are available. Additionally, water sports facilities, including jet skis and paddleboards, and a boat rental service for exploring nearby hidden beaches and coastal gems, are on offer.

Getting There – Parking, Accessibility & Transport

  • Parking: There is limited parking available here, so it’s advisable to arrive early to secure a spot.
  • Accessibility: The beach is easily accessible but may require care for those with mobility issues.
  • Transport: The B17 bus route connects Corfu Town with Glyfada – the bus stop is here. Renting a car is a great way to explore more of the island.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Visiting

  • Sandy Terrain: The beach is sandy, so no special footwear is needed.
  • Busy Summers: Glyfada Beach is very popular, especially in July and August, and the famous beach bars only add to its appeal. Early visits are recommended for the best spots.
  • Strong Sunlight: With limited natural shade, sun protection (hats, umbrellas, sunscreen) is essential.
  • Boat Traffic: With boat rentals nearby, swimmers may occasionally encounter vessels.
  • Clientele: The far end of this beach has a nudist area.

Final Verdict

  • Best for: Families, couples, and active travellers who enjoy organized beaches with nearby amenities. During peak summer months, those wanting to ‘party’ can do just that at the beach bars.
  • Best time to go: May, June, or September for a quieter experience, or July-August for a lively summer atmosphere.
  • Crowds: Busy during peak season; early arrivals are beneficial.
  • Extra perks: Gorgeous sunset views, clear waters for snorkelling, proximity to Pelekas village for dining and shopping, and famous beach bars.
