Overview: Discovering Kalamaki Beach

Kalamaki Beach, also known as Apraos, is famous for one remarkable feature: its incredibly shallow water. This vast, sandy bay is often called Corfu's "natural swimming pool for toddlers," as you can walk for up to one hundred metres into the calm, warm sea before it even reaches your knees. Long wooden jetties stretch out over the water, allowing easier access to deeper sections for swimming. With soft golden sand and a handful of superb beachfront tavernas, Kalamaki is the undisputed champion for families with very young children seeking the safest possible beach day.

In-Depth Guide & Details

Location & Getting Around Kalamaki

Kalamaki is on the northeast coast, about 35 km from Corfu Town. It lies between Kassiopi and the nature reserve of Antinioti Lagoon. The drive takes just under an hour.

  • Parking: There is a small parking area and street parking available, though it can fill up in peak season.
  • Accessibility: The beach is completely flat and easily accessed from the parking areas, making it ideal for pushchairs.

Key Attractions & Features
  • Ultra-Shallow Water: This is the shallowest beach on Corfu by a significant margin. The water remains ankle-to-knee-deep for a vast distance, creating an enormous, safe paddling area.
  • Soft Sandy Beach: Unlike the pebble coves common to this coast, Kalamaki offers a long stretch of soft, golden sand, perfect for sandcastles and playing.
  • Wooden Jetties: A key feature of the beach, these long piers stretch out over the shallow water, allowing easy access to deeper sections for swimming and creating a classic holiday photo opportunity.
Amenities & What to Expect
Kalamaki is very well-organised for a comfortable family day out. The entire beach is lined with sunbeds and umbrellas for hire, which are often managed by the excellent beachfront tavernas. These tavernas serve delicious food and drinks and provide restroom facilities. There are no loud water sports, preserving the beach's peaceful, family-focused atmosphere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the 'Canal D'Amour' Kalamaki?

No. This is Kalamaki Beach (Apraos) on the northeast coast. There is another, much smaller beach called Kalamaki near the resort of Peroulades on the northwest coast, which is often confused with this one.

How shallow is the water really?

It is exceptionally shallow. You can walk out for 50-100 metres into the sea, and the water will often still only be up to your knees. It's unlike any other beach on the island in this regard.

Are the tavernas good for families?

Absolutely. The tavernas at Kalamaki are very family-friendly, offering a wide range of food, high chairs, and a relaxed atmosphere. Many have play areas for children as well.
