An Overview of Kanoni

Kanoni isn’t a traditional beach but one of Corfu’s most famous and thrilling experiences. It’s a world-renowned viewpoint and swimming spot, offering the unique spectacle of planes landing at the nearby airport, flying just metres over your head. The area is centred around a causeway that crosses the water, connecting Kanoni to Perama and providing front-row seats to the aerial action. With iconic views of the Vlacherna Monastery and the legendary Pontikonisi (Mouse Island), this is a must-visit location for incredible photos and unforgettable memories.

A Practical Guide to Kanoni

Location & Getting There

Kanoni is a peninsula located just south of Corfu Town, a mere 4 km from the city centre. The drive from town is very short, taking around 10-15 minutes.

  • Parking: There is a large parking area within the vicinity.
  • Accessibility: The upper viewing areas and cafes are easily accessible. The causeway below is flat and easy to walk along.
  • Transport: The best way to visit is via the local blue bus (No. 2a), which terminates right at the top viewpoint. It’s frequent, cheap, and avoids all parking stress.

Beach & Water Characteristics

  • Swimming here is done from concrete platforms and rocks off the side of the causeway. There is no sandy or pebble beach entry.
  • The water in the Halikiopoulos Lagoon is very calm and sheltered, but it gets deep quickly.
  • This area is for confident swimmers who are comfortable entering the water from a platform.
  • There are no lifeguards; this is an informal public swimming area.
  • The 🟦 symbol indicates this beach has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag for its excellent water quality and safety.

Amenities

The primary amenities are the famous cafés perched on the cliff, offering panoramic views from their terraces. Down by the water, the causeway itself is the main feature. Small boats offer trips across to visit Mouse Island for a small fee. You will not find sunbeds or umbrellas; this is an experience spot, not a lounging beach.

Is Kanoni Right For You?

You’ll Love Kanoni If…

  • You want a unique and thrilling experience for families, couples, photographers, and aviation enthusiasts.
  • You want an incredible, up-close view of landing airplanes.
  • You are looking for iconic views of Mouse Island and Vlacherna Monastery.

Things to Keep in Mind…

  • It’s for Plane Spotting: This is the main event. The noise is immense and the sight is unforgettable.
  • Not a Traditional Beach: Do not expect sand, sunbeds, or a place to relax for hours. It’s a place for viewing, photos, and a quick swim.
  • Check Flight Schedules: For the best experience, look up the airport’s arrival times online to know when to expect planes.
  • Very Crowded: This is one of Corfu’s most popular tourist spots. Expect crowds, especially on the causeway when a flight is due.
