Marathias Beach

Marathias Beach 🟦

Overview

Marathias Beach is one of Corfu’s most magnificent stretches of coastline, a seemingly endless expanse of fine, golden sand that has earned it a coveted Blue Flag award. This vast beach offers a perfect blend of organised sections with full amenities and quieter, more natural areas for those seeking peace. Its sheer size means it never feels overly crowded, making it ideal for everyone from families and couples to solo sun-worshippers.

Location

Marathias Beach is located on the tranquil southwest coast of Corfu, about 35 km from Corfu Town. The drive takes approximately one hour through scenic inland villages. The beach faces west, offering spectacular sunset views over the Ionian Sea. It is sometimes known as Santa Barbara Beach at its southern end, but it is all part of the same continuous sandy bay.

Water Depth & Safety

  • The water is shallow and clean, deepening very gradually, making it exceptionally safe for children and families.
  • As a Blue Flag beach, the water quality is consistently monitored and excellent.
  • On windy afternoons, it can develop some fun waves, but it is generally calm in the mornings.
  • Lifeguards are on duty in the main organised sections during the peak summer season.

Amenities

Marathias is very well-equipped. The main access points lead to organised sections with numerous beach bars and tavernas offering sunbed and umbrella rentals. You’ll find a wide range of facilities including:

  • Sunbeds & Umbrellas for hire
  • Water sports centres (jet skis, paddleboards, banana boats)
  • Showers and changing facilities
  • Excellent beachfront tavernas and cafés

If you prefer solitude, simply walk a few hundred metres along the sand in either direction to find vast, empty stretches.

Getting There – Parking, Accessibility & Transport

  • Parking: There is street parking right behind the beach. Additionally, many of the tavernas have car parks too so it is generally pretty easy to find a place to park.
  • Accessibility: The beach is flat and easily accessible from the car parks, with no steep climbs or difficult paths, making it suitable for all ages and mobility levels.
  • Transport: Hiring a car is the most convenient option. The B1 bus route services between Marathias and Corfu Town but the bus stop is not near to the beach and requires either a walk or taxi afterwards.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Visiting

  • It’s Huge: Don’t judge the beach by the first entry point. Walk along the shore to find the vibe that suits you best, from lively to deserted.
  • West-Facing: It gets full sun all day long and is one of the best spots on the island for watching the sunset.
  • Wind Factor: While often calm, the open bay can get windy in the afternoon, creating waves. Check the forecast if you prefer mirror-flat water.
  • Santa Barbara Beach: Don’t get confused if you see signs for Santa Barbara; it’s the southern continuation of the same amazing beach.

Final Verdict

  • Best for: Absolutely everyone – families with small children, couples, groups, and those seeking either amenities or solitude.
  • Best time to go: Morning for the calmest water, or late afternoon to stay for the spectacular sunset.
  • Crowds: The main sections can be lively in high season, but the beach is so large that it never feels truly packed.
  • Extra perks: Incredible sunsets, huge space to play or relax, and a fantastic choice of amenities.
