Petriti Beach

Petriti Beach

Overview

Petriti is not just a beach but a bustling, authentic Greek fishing village, home to one of the island’s largest fishing fleets. The experience here centres around its charming harbour, where colourful boats bob in the water and fishermen mend their nets. Adjacent to the harbour is a pleasant, sandy beach perfect for a relaxing swim. Visitors come to Petriti to soak up the traditional atmosphere and, most importantly, to dine at the superb waterfront tavernas renowned for serving the freshest seafood in Corfu.

Location

Situated on the southeast coast, Petriti is approximately 35 km from Corfu Town, with the drive taking around 55 minutes. It serves as a charming coastal hub for the southern part of the island, nestled between the resorts of Boukari and Lefkimmi. The entire village is built around its active harbour, giving it a lively, working character.

Water Depth & Safety

  • The beach area features soft sand and very calm, shallow water, protected by the harbour breakwater.
  • The gentle slope and clear water make it very safe for families and children to paddle and swim.
  • As a working harbour, be mindful of boat traffic in the main channels, although the designated beach area is quite separate and safe.
  • There are no lifeguards on duty, as it is not an officially organised tourist beach.

Amenities

The primary amenities in Petriti are its fantastic fish tavernas, which are the main attraction. These establishments line the waterfront, offering shaded seating with beautiful views of the harbour. While there are no large-scale sunbed rental operations, some tavernas may offer a few sunbeds on the beach for their customers. The village itself has small supermarkets, cafés, and bakeries.

Getting There – Parking, Accessibility & Transport

  • Parking: There is a main parking area near the harbour and additional street parking throughout the village. It can get busy during peak lunch and dinner times, but you can usually find a spot.
  • Accessibility: The harbour front and beach area are flat and easily accessible, making it a comfortable place to walk around for all ages.
  • Transport: The easiest way to reach Petriti is by car. The B2 bus service from Corfu Town also runs directly to Petriti.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Visiting

  • Go for the Food: While the beach is pleasant, the real reason to visit Petriti is for the authentic dining experience. It’s a must-visit for seafood lovers.
  • Working Village: This is a living, breathing fishing village, not a polished resort. Embrace the authentic, slightly rustic charm.
  • Watch the Boats: A great pastime here is simply sitting at a café or taverna and watching the fishing boats come in and out of the harbour.
  • Quieter Vibe: It’s a relaxing destination, ideal for a long, leisurely meal rather than a day of high-energy beach activities.

Final Verdict

  • Best for: Foodies, families, and anyone seeking a truly authentic Greek village experience away from the main tourist trail.
  • Best time to go: Ideal for a memorable lunch or dinner. The beach is lovely all day for a quiet swim.
  • Crowds: The beach itself is rarely crowded. The tavernas are popular with locals and informed tourists, especially in the evenings.
  • Extra perks: Unbeatable fresh seafood, a genuine connection to local Corfiot life, and beautiful harbour views.
