In-Depth Cruise Guide

Getting from the Port to Corfu Town

Getting from the cruise terminal to the historic centre is straightforward. You have three main options:

1. Walking (Recommended)

The walk takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes (1.5km to the New Fortress/Old Port). Exit the terminal, turn left, and follow the coastline. There is a pavement the entire way. It is a safe walk with lovely views of the fortresses as you approach.

2. The Blue Bus (No. 15)

The No. 15 Blue Bus connects the Port directly to San Rocco Square (city centre) and the Ticket Office. The bus stop is located inside the port area, just to the left as you exit the main terminal building. Tickets can be bought from the machine or the bus driver (carry small change/coins).

3. Taxi

Taxis are available immediately outside the terminal but you can also book your transfer in advance to avoid the crowds. The ride to town takes 5-10 minutes depending on traffic. Note that prices may be fixed for “Port to Town” trips.

Car Hire & Driving from the Port

Is it worth hiring a car for a day? Yes, if you want to escape the crowds and see the more of the island, including the west coast beaches or mountain villages.

However, do not rely on finding a car upon arrival in peak season (July/August). Several rental agencies have desks inside the Cruise Terminal arrivals hall, but pre-booking is essential. Driving in Corfu Town is traffic-heavy, but once you clear the town (heading North or West), the roads open up.

Best Beaches Near the Port

If your goal is a swim, you don’t need to travel far.

Faliraki (Swim in Town)

Located beneath the Old Fortress in Corfu Town. Not a sandy beach, but a paved bathing area with a ladder into crystal clear water and a cafe/bar with views of the fortress. Perfect for a quick dip after sightseeing.

Mon Repos (Royal Baths)

A 30-40 minute walk or short bus ride (Blue Bus No. 2a) from town. A mix of sand and pebble with a stone pier, famous for its history as a royal bathing spot.

Things to Do in Corfu Town
If you prefer to stay local, the UNESCO-listed Old Town is packed with sights just a short walk or bus ride from the port.
1. The Old Fortress (Palaio Frourio)
Dominating the east side of town, this Venetian masterpiece offers the best panoramic views of the city and sea.
2. St. Spyridon Church

3. Coffee at The Liston

4. Get Lost in ‘Campiello’
Wander the labyrinth of narrow, laundry-draped alleyways (kantounia) in the oldest district of the city.
5. Shopping for Local Treasures
Browse the countless boutiques for handmade leather sandals, olive wood carvings, and the island’s signature Kumquat liqueur.

Cruiser FAQ: Money, Wi-Fi & Safety
1. Can I use US Dollars or British Pounds?
Officially, no. Some tourist shops may accept them at a poor exchange rate, but for buses, taxis, and small cafes, you need Euros (€). There are ATMs inside the terminal.
2. Is there Wi-Fi at the port?
Yes, the cruise terminal building offers free Wi-Fi. Many cafes in Old Town also offer free Wi-Fi if you buy a drink.
3. Is the port area safe?
Yes, extremely. However, as with any busy port, pickpockets can operate in crowded areas.
4. What if I miss my ship?
Corfu is well connected. You would likely need to fly to Athens or take a ferry to Italy/Mainland Greece to catch up, but it is costly. Always plan to be back near the port 1 hour before departure.
5. Are shops open on Sundays?
In the Old Town, tourist shops stay open every day during the cruise season (April–October), including Sundays. High street brands (Marks & Spencer, etc.) may be closed on Sundays.
