An Overview of Agios Georgios South

Agios Georgios South (often referred to as Agios Georgios Argirades to distinguish it from its northern namesake) is a wonderfully relaxed and family-friendly beach resort on Corfu’s southwest coast. It’s renowned for its exceptionally long, golden sandy beach that gently slopes into warm, shallow waters, making it an idyllic spot for families with young children and anyone seeking a peaceful, unhurried holiday. This charming resort offers a laid-back atmosphere with plenty of traditional tavernas and beautiful natural surroundings.

Location & Getting There

Agios Georgios South is situated on the southwest coast of Corfu, approximately 30 km from Corfu Town and the airport. The resort stretches along its expansive bay, nestled between the smaller resorts of Marathias and the protected area of Chalikounas. The drive from Corfu Town takes around 1 hour and leads you through the olive groves and rural landscapes of southern Corfu.

Transport & Accessibility

  • By Car: Parking is generally plentiful and easy, with many designated areas along the beach road. Renting a car is recommended for exploring the beautiful, less-visited beaches of the south, like nearby Issos.
  • By Bus: The resort is served by the B1 Green Bus service, providing connections to Corfu Town and other southern villages.
  • Accessibility: The entire resort, including the long beach and promenade, is exceptionally flat, making it one of the most accessible resorts in Corfu for pushchairs and those with mobility challenges.

What to See & Do in Agios Georgios South

  • The Golden Sand Beach: The star attraction. A vast beach that stretches for kilometres, offering ample space even in peak season. Its shallow, calm waters are famously safe for children.
  • Explore Lake Korission: Just a short walk or drive south, this significant ecological wetland is a haven for nature lovers and birdwatchers, home to diverse birdlife including flamingos (seasonally).
  • Enjoy Water Sports: Due to the gentle conditions, the bay is perfect for water sports like stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and windsurfing, with lessons often available.
  • Walks & Cycling: The flat terrain around the beach and towards Lake Korission makes it excellent for leisurely walks and cycling amidst beautiful natural scenery.

Food, Drink & Amenities

Agios Georgios South is well-equipped with amenities for a comfortable stay without being overly commercialised. You’ll find a great choice of traditional, family-run tavernas and a few low-key bars, but no loud nightlife. There are several mini-markets for daily essentials, bakeries, and souvenir shops.
