Overview: The Authentic Heart of the South

Lefkimmi is not a purpose-built holiday resort; it is the vibrant, traditional capital of Southern Corfu. While many visitors know it only for its busy port, the broader Lefkimmi area offers a wonderfully slow-paced alternative to the more commercialised north. It is a place of vast olive groves, historic canals, and some of the most under-rated sandy beaches on the island. By staying in the Lefkimmi area, you are choosing to immerse yourself in real Corfiot life, where the historic town centre meets a scenic coastline that stretches towards the southernmost tip of the island.

The B1 bus route is one of the most frequent services on the island, connecting Corfu Town to Lefkimmi and Kavos.

Ferry Connections

Lefkimmi Port offers a vital link to Igoumenitsa on the mainland and the beautiful island of Paxoi, often at lower prices than the main Corfu Port.

In-Depth Guide & Details

Location & Getting Around Lefkimmi

Lefkimmi is the largest town in the south and feels worlds away from the tourist-heavy resorts of the north.

  • The Layout: The town is built around a river (canal) where local fishermen moor their boats. The “resort” area is more spread out, encompassing the town, the port (Melikia), and several beaches.
  • Accessibility: The terrain is predominantly flat, making it an excellent choice for those who prefer easy walking or cycling.

Key Attractions & Features
  • Potami (The Canal): The picturesque heart of the town. Lined with cafes and tavernas, it is the perfect spot to watch the world go by in a truly authentic setting.
  • Bouka Beach: A beautiful, quiet beach where the river meets the sea. It features fine sand and very shallow, warm water.
  • Alykes Salt Pans: Located near the beach, these historic salt pans are a haven for wildlife, including flamingos during certain times of the year.
  • Lefkimmi Port: A bustling hub that connects the south of the island to mainland Greece and the stunning islands of Paxoi and Antipaxoi.
Amenities & What to Expect
As a working town, Lefkimmi has excellent year-round amenities. You will find large supermarkets, banks, pharmacies, and a high street with local shops. The dining is fantastic, focusing on traditional Corfiot dishes (like Burdeto and Sofrito) at local prices. It is one of the best places on the island to experience a genuine Greek “Panigiri” (festival) during the summer months.
Is the Lefkimmi Area Right for You?

You’ll Love Lefkimmi If…

  • You want to avoid the “tourist bubbles” and see real Greek life.
  • You are travelling with young children who need very shallow, calm seas.
  • You plan on visiting Paxoi or the mainland via the port.
  • You enjoy flat, scenic walks through olive groves and salt pans.

You Might Prefer Elsewhere If…

  • You are looking for a resort that is 100% focused on tourism.
  • You want a wide choice of international cuisine or luxury boutique hotels.
  • You find the industrial nature of the port area unappealing.
