Pelekas is a resort of two halves, offering one of the most dramatic landscapes in the Ionian. Perched 270 metres above sea level is the historic Pelekas village, a maze of narrow streets and traditional architecture known for its bohemian spirit. Directly below lies the resort’s coastal heart: Kontogialos Beach (often called Pelekas Beach), a stunning bay of fine golden sand. Whether you are sipping cocktails at a beach bar or watching the sun dip into the sea from a mountain peak, Pelekas offers a holiday experience that is both restorative and awe-inspiring.

In-Depth Guide & Details

Location & Getting Around Pelekas

Pelekas is centrally located on the west coast, making it a perfect base for exploring both the north and south of the island.

  • The Village-Beach Link: The village is located high on the hill, while the beach is at the bottom of a very steep, winding 1.5km road. During summer, a local shuttle bus often operates between the two, but having a car is much easier.
  • Parking: Parking is available in the village square and in several large car parks down at Kontogialos Beach.

Key Attractions & Features
  • Kaiser’s Throne: The island’s most famous panoramic viewpoint. Kaiser Wilhelm II used to visit this spot to watch the sunset. It offers 360-degree views across the entire island.
  • Kontogialos (Pelekas Beach): A broad, Blue Flag sandy beach with shallow waters, ideal for swimming and sunset strolls.
  • The Bohemian Village: Pelekas village has a unique “hippy-chic” vibe with colourful houses, boutique shops, and a welcoming, artsy community.
  • Mirtiotissa Monastery: A short drive away, this tiny, beautiful monastery is located just above the famous Mirtiotissa beach.
Amenities & What to Expect
Pelekas is famous for its dining scene. The village square is packed with tavernas offering sunset views and high-quality Greek cuisine. Down at the beach, you’ll find several stylish beach bars and seafood restaurants. The resort has mini-markets, ATMs, and small boutique shops, but lacks large commercial centres, which adds to its charm.
