THE BEAUTIFUL CHALLENGE: WHAT IT’S REALLY LIKE DRIVING IN CORFU

“Should we rent a car?” It’s the number one question we get asked. Our answer is always the same: Yes! If you want to experience the hidden heart of the island, a car is your golden ticket.

Driving in Corfu isn’t just about getting from A to B; it’s part of the island experience. From the shimmering Ionian Sea accompanying you along the coast to the adrenaline-pumping hairpins of Mount Pantokrator, every mile tells a story. While the local “Green Bus” service is excellent, a car unlocks the secluded coves and mountain tavernas that tour buses simply can’t reach.

In-Depth Driving Guide

The “Village Squeeze” & Narrow Roads

Every driver in Corfu has a story about “the squeeze.” It’s that moment you turn into a village and the road suddenly narrows to what feels like the width of a footpath.

  • Mirrors: Don’t be afraid to fold them in if it gets tight.
  • Patience: Locals are incredibly skilled at this. If you meet a truck, they will often guide you with hand signals.
  • Right of Way: Usually, the driver coming uphill has the right of way, but in narrow villages, common sense and a friendly wave prevail.
Licensing, Rules & Speed Limits
  • License: An EU license is accepted. Non-EU visitors (USA, Australia, etc.) should carry an International Driving Permit (IDP).
  • Limits: 50km/h in built-up areas and 90km/h on major open roads. Speed cameras do exist on the main National Roads.
  • Alcohol: The legal limit is very low (0.5g/l). Our advice? If you’re driving, don’t drink at all.
Fuel Stations & Parking
  • Full Service: Most stations are not self-service. Pull up and an attendant will fill the car for you.
  • Hours: Many rural stations close on Sundays or late at night. Keep your tank at least half-full if exploring remote areas.
  • Parking: In Corfu Town, use the large Spianada car park. Parking on the street in town is notoriously difficult and can result in your plates being removed by police if done illegally! We also wrote a handy blog regrading the official parking app too.
Navigation & Safety Tips

Google Maps: Generally reliable, but it sometimes tries to take you down unpaved “donkey tracks” to save 2 minutes. If the road looks like a dirt path, don’t take it! Also be aware that if you take a hire car ‘off road’ insurances often become invalid.

The Horn: On blind mountain bends, give a short “toot-toot.” It’s not a sign of anger; it’s the local way of saying “I’m coming around the corner!”
