11:30 – The Lazarus Carols: Choral groups from the entire island sing carols starting at 📍 St. Nicholas of the Elders. At 12:30, the groups gathering at 📍 San Giacomo (Old Town Hall) for a thundering join performance. Organised by the Foreas Korfiantikis Ekfrasis.

20:30 – The Old Philharmonic Society gala performance at the 📍 Municipal Theatre.

Palm Sunday — 5th April 2026

11:00 – Litany of St. Spyridon: The island’s most visceral litany follows the city walls to commemorate the 1629 miracle. Starts from 📍 Saint Spyridon Church led by the Metropolitan of Corfu.

20:00 – The Kapodistrias Philharmonic Union and the Metropolitan Choir perform Charles Nicholas Bochsa’s Requiem at 📍 St. George (Old Fortress).

21:00 – “Epitaph Lament”: Dedicated to Ariel Ramirez, performed by the Mantzaros Philharmonic at the 📍 Municipal Theatre.

11:30 – Apokathelosis Ceremony (Descent from the Cross) in every church.

Processions begin in the afternoon, with philharmonics performing masterpieces: Albinoni’s Adagio, Verdi’s Marcia Funebre, Moreno’s La Madruga, and Chopin’s Funeral March.

Holy Saturday — 11th April 2026

06:00 – The Earthquake Custom: A thrumming re-enactment at 📍 Panagia ton Xenon. Faithful thrum the pews to simulate the earthquake described in the Gospels.

09:00 – Litany & Epitaphios of St. Spyridon: The oldest procession. Bands perform Amleto (Faccio), Calde Lacrimae (de Michellis), and Beethoven’s Heroica.

11:00 AM – THE BOTIDES

As the bells ring sharp at 11:00 AM, massive clay pots are thundered from balconies across the Old Town. This thumping thrum is the heart of Greek Easter.

11:01 – THE MASTELLA TRADITION: As the echoes of the Botides fade in the 📍 Pinia Quarter, the visceral ‘Mastella’ begins. A large wooden barrel is filled with water and adorned with myrtle and ribbons. Passers-by cast coins into its depths for good luck. At the first strike of the Resurrection bell, a brave soul plunges into the thrumming water to claim the thumping bounty of coins. A truly unique and joyous Corfiot spectacle.

18:00 – The Basmata: Sacred ritual returning the relic of Saint Spyridon to his shrine at 📍 Holy Church.

Lazarus Saturday: Parish women gather to weave ‘Vagia’ at Kynopiastes center from 17:00. Good Friday: Varypatades revives the ‘bomboloi’ tradition—lighting hundreds of snail shells to guide the Epitaphios with a thrumming glow. Litanies in Kynopiastes, Chrysida, and Gastouri are accompanied by local bands. Easter Monday: The Virou parish litany reach Pontikonisi by boat. Thomas Sunday litanies held in Gastouri, Kynopiastes, and Agioi Deka, concluding in Stavros.

2. Paleokastritsa & NW Coast

Good Friday: Morning procession from Paleokastritsa Monastery to Alipa Port with the Lakonites Choir. Evening processions follow in Lakones, Liapades (St. Nicholas & St. Vlasios), and Skripero. Easter Monday: Grand thrumming litanies in Doukades, Skripero, and Makrades lead to traditional thumping ‘Panigiri’ festivals. Thomas Sunday: Krini and Liapades hold choral litanies and square dances. Nia Friday: A visceral festival at Paleokastritsa Monastery celebrates the Virgin Mary.

3. Parelion Coast

Easter Monday: Thrumming processions depart Vatos, Giannades, Kokkini, and Pelekas toward scenic chapels for thumping folk festivals.
