Immerse Yourself in Tradition at the Afra Village Panigiri

If you are visiting Corfu in mid-May, the Afra Village Festival on May 18th is an essential addition to your itinerary. Known locally as a “Panigiri,” this event celebrates the religious feast of Agios Silas and represents the perfect fusion of faith, community, and celebration that defines the Ionian spirit.

What to Expect at a Traditional Corfiot Panigiri
The festival takes place in the central square of Afra, a village known for its lush surroundings and traditional architecture. As evening falls, the village comes alive. The scent of wood-fired grills fills the air as local vendors prepare traditional dishes, most notably the succulent roasted lamb and pork that are staples of these celebrations.

The music is the soul of the evening. Local musicians take to the stage with clarinets, violins, and lutes, playing the rhythmic folk songs that have been passed down through generations. You will see locals of all ages – from young children to village elders – joining hands in traditional circle dances.

Why Visit Afra?
Afra is a hidden gem located in central Corfu, offering a glimpse into island life away from the main resort areas. Attending the festival allows you to support the local economy and experience the “Partner-First” philosophy we champion at Discover Corfu.
