A Perfect Summer Day in Corfu: From Sunrise Bougatsa to a Sunset Taverna

People always ask, “What’s the one thing I have to do?” But Corfu isn’t about one thing. It’s about a feeling, a rhythm. So, forget the checklists. Let us take you through our perfect day on our island.

A day that captures its heart and soul.

Morning: The Old Town Awakens

The day doesn’t start with a rush. It begins in the quiet labyrinth of Corfu Old Town before the crowds arrive. The air is cool, and the golden stone walls seem to hum with a gentle energy. The sun is yet to pierce the skyline from beyond the old fortress, and we just have enough time to grab some breakfast before enjoying the sunrise.

Our first stop is always a tiny, family-run bakery for a warm Bougatsa – a flaky pastry filled with sweet cream and dusted with cinnamon – or Spanakopita – a similar flaky pastry but this time savoury, filled with spinach and feta cheese. A Greek coffee or Freddo Cappuccino (dependant on our mood) is next on the agenda, and it is enjoyed sat on a quiet bench on the Liston as the sun rises, watching the swallows dart under the elegant arches whilst the town slowly comes to life.

This isn’t sightseeing; it’s breathing the island in, one breath at a time.

Midday: The Search for Turquoise Water

With the sun climbing higher in the sky, it’s time to escape. We jump in our car and head west, taking the winding roads through ancient olive groves. The real Corfu reveals itself on these type of drives, and its always worth considering hiring a car to really experience Corfu as it is meant to be experienced.

Our destination? A beach that isn’t a hotspot on the main tourist maps. A place like Rovinia or Mirtiotissa, where you have to hike down a dusty (often steep) path to be rewarded with a slice of paradise. The moment our feet touch the cool pebbles (or sand dependant on our exact destination) and the impossible shade of Ionian blue glistens in the sunlight, the whole world melts away.

It is impossible to just spend an hour of two at one of Corfu’s beaches, and therefore, this is often our set up for the day – towels laid out, refreshments at the ready, a picnic of Greek salad, Feta, and village bread, and of course a good book to keep us occupied! It’s easy for time to simply escape you whilst floating on the water, with the scent of pine and salt in the air, but its paramount that time is monitored to ensure the main event is not missed!

Golden Hour: The Sunset Ritual

As the late afternoon light softens, there is a pull to drive slightly inland, up into the hills, through the traditional heart of our island. The goal is the village of Pelekas and the viewpoint known as Kaiser’s Throne. This is where the sheer scale of our island’s beauty becomes apparent and you would be excused for having to take a moment of silence to simply take it all in.

As we find a spot to sit and relax, the sky ignites in shades of orange, pink, and purple, silhouetting the coastline below – moments like this are what life is all about! It’s a silent, shared experience with a handful of others who’ve made the pilgrimage. It’s a moment of pure, breathtaking gratitude.

Evening: Dinner Under the Stars

The perfect day ends not at a fancy restaurant, but at a family-run taverna in a tiny village square, somewhere like Doukades or Sinarades. The tables are mismatched, the light comes from strings of bulbs overhead, and the menu is whatever the family cooked that day, a combination that only adds to the authentic charm of the place.

Village wine and plates to share are a must: tender Sofrito, spicy Tsigareli, and a crisp Greek salad that tastes of sunshine. The sound of cicadas and quiet conversation is the only soundtrack. This is the authentic flavour of Corfu, served with a genuine smile. It’s the perfect end to a perfect day.

Now, Go and Create Your Own Perfect Day

This is my Corfu. A mix of quiet moments, stunning nature, and incredible food. Use this as inspiration, but the real magic happens when you take a random turn and find your own hidden gem. The island is waiting.
