The Snorkeler’s Paradise: Common Fish

You don’t need to be a deep-sea diver to meet the locals. In the clear, shallow waters of any rocky cove, you’ll find a host of colourful characters. Just float gently and watch their world unfold.

Ornate Wrasse (Thalassoma pavo)

These small, jewel-like fish are the dandies of the sea. Males are a kaleidoscope of red, green, and blue. They are curious and can be seen flitting in and out of rocks and seagrass beds.

Mediterranean Parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense)

A true splash of colour! The females are a vibrant red, while the males are a distinguished grey. They are named for their beak-like teeth, which they use to scrape algae from rocks. Listen carefully and you can sometimes hear them crunching!

Likelihood of Spotting: ★★★☆☆

The Brains of the Blue: Invertebrates

The rocks and seabed are home to some of the sea’s most intelligent and unusual residents.

The Common Octopus

The master of disguise! Spotting an octopus is a real thrill. Look for them in rocky dens – you can often spot their location by the pile of empty shells discarded outside. If you see one, watch quietly as it might change color right before your eyes!

Likelihood of Spotting: ★★☆☆☆

Cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis)

Another incredible shapeshifter. Cuttlefish can change their skin colour and texture in an instant to blend in or communicate. They often hover majestically over sandy or seagrass beds. Seeing their rippling fins and hypnotic patterns is mesmerizing.

Likelihood of Spotting: ★★☆☆☆

Majestic Mariners: Marine Mammals & Reptiles

Some of the sea’s most famous residents are bigger, rarer, and require a bit more luck—or a boat trip—to see. These are the creatures that make a holiday truly unforgettable.

Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta)

These gentle, ancient mariners gracefully swim the local waters. While they may not nest here, they use the area as a feeding ground. You’re most likely to spot one from a boat trip, as they surface for air. Remember, they are a protected species, so always keep a respectful distance.

Likelihood of Spotting: ★★☆☆☆

Common Dolphins

Is there anything more joyful than seeing a pod of dolphins leaping through the waves? Boat trips out to deeper water, especially towards Paxos or the north of the island, offer the best chance to witness this incredible spectacle. Their playful energy is pure magic.

Likelihood of Spotting: ★★☆☆☆

Mediterranean Monk Seal

The holy grail of Ionian sea life. As one of the most endangered mammals in the world, the Mediterranean Monk Seal is incredibly rare. They live in remote sea caves along rugged coastlines. To even glimpse one of these beautiful, shy creatures is a once-in-a-lifetime privilege.

Likelihood of Spotting: ★☆☆☆☆ (Extremely Rare)
