DISCOVER CORFU SHOWCASE
The Brunch That Became an Urban Legend in Palia Psaradika

The true gastronomic pulse of a city is rarely revealed in its bustling squares. It hides where time seems to possess its own rhythm, in narrow alleyways (kantounia) you must wander patiently to discover. In the historic heart of Corfu, Agiou Vasiliou Street, nestled in the Pinia neighbourhood, keeps a profound, indelible memory alive.
This is Palia Psaradika (the Old Fish Market). A place where the past still smells faintly of the sea, as local fishermen once ended up here straight from the harbour. Small, working-class shops would fry the catch of the day, serving it piping hot, wrapped in newspaper cones to locals and passers-by. On this very street, whose history has always been steeped in the joy of unpretentious food, a completely different, yet equally authentic chapter began in 2024.
Sunday Coffee & Nibbles is not just another typical arrival. It is a supremely elegant, cosmopolitan sanctuary that moves quietly yet substantively, offering the warmest, most atmospheric corner for those seeking the true essence of comfort gastronomy.

Sunday opened its doors out of a genuine need for creative expression. Joan Simoneti, carrying the robust experience of an acclaimed private chef, and her daughter, Gabriella, sought a fresh start. As an inseparable Corfiot-Welsh duo, they realised that something fundamental was missing from the island’s map: an intimate space with the relaxed, cosy feel of traditional British cafés, capable of offering an exceptional breakfast and light lunch.
They consciously avoided the congestion of the main commercial arteries. They were looking for a small oasis of calm within the chaotic heart of the city. And they found it in Palia Psaradika, creating a hangout that feels as though it embraces you the moment you cross its threshold.
The aesthetic of Sunday is an ode to the warmth of natural materials. The approach is earthy and unpretentious: traditional cotto (terracotta) on the floor grounds the space, wood exudes intimacy, whilst refined metallic details lend a discreet, contemporary character.
Yet, what truly captivates the eye is its colour palette. The characteristic, warm hues of Corfiot architecture mingle with the deep colours of Oriental spices – the very same spices Joan loves to use with passion in her kitchen. The feeling the venue emanates is wonderfully fluid. It relaxes you to such an extent that you momentarily forget you are in the Ionian; its aura is so exotic and welcoming that many visitors feel as though they have been transported to a hidden, bohemian courtyard in Latin America.
The cooking at Sunday knows no half measures. It is a deeply emotional cuisine, where the family’s British heritage meets the intoxicating intensities of the Middle East, the mediterranean flavours with absolute reverence for Corfiot produce. The philosophy relies on an uncompromising ‘home-cooked’ care. Whatever is not made by their own hands is sought out religiously from small local producers – from the sourdough bread to the farm-fresh eggs and corfiot honey.
The ultimate culinary signatures of the establishment are undeniably the Turkish eggs and the toasted, handmade Sunday’s Organic Granola. However, Joan’s true mastery is hidden in the way she deconstructs and elevates classic recipes.
Try the Shakshuka and you will understand. Here, it is presented in a Hellenised, staggeringly profound version. Fresh cherry tomatoes are slow-roasted in the oven, embraced by fresh basil, oregano, and a subtle hint of garlic. They are then mashed into their own juices, achieving an unimaginable concentration of flavour. Finally, they welcome the perfect poached eggs, and the dish is elevated with their own handmade chilli oil that leaves a magnificent, spicy aftertaste.
As the morning gracefully transitions into the afternoon and the appetite seeks something more robust, the light lunch menu takes the baton with addictive offerings. The protagonist that fills the entire alleyway with its intoxicating fragrance is their daily, aromatic curry. This is where Joan’s profound passion for Eastern spices finds its ultimate expression: rich, velvety sauces simmered with endless patience, releasing deep, earthy notes that envelop you like a warm blanket. It is the absolute epitome of comfort food, crafted with such mastery that it beckons you to return time and time again.
As for the desserts, they are a reason for a daily visit in their own right. The display cabinet rotates constantly, offering everything from an authentic, beautifully scorched Basque cheesecake to a sinful blackberry and peanut butter tart.

In a space that so deeply respects flavour, beverages are treated as a ritual. The exceptional coffee comes from Cofeco, a local Corfiot roastery that guarantees a fresh roast and a full body. The juices are prepared exclusively from fresh fruits and vegetables, starring the famous ‘green’ juice – a true elixir of green apple, cucumber, spinach and celery that instantly revitalises you.
As the day progresses, the menu makes way for classic and carefully crafted signature cocktails, flanked by a small, exquisitely structured wine list sourced from selected, mainly Greek wineries.
Introducing unfamiliar, cosmopolitan flavours to an audience accustomed to tradition requires courage. “There was a lot of uncertainty at first,” confess Joan and Gabriella. “Our menu and flavours were very different from what existed in the Corfu market.”
They, however, made no compromises. They remained stubbornly faithful to their vision. And the locals rewarded them, embracing Sunday with unprecedented devotion. Their recent, highly honourable inclusion in the pages of Aegean Airlines’ Blue magazine simply came to confirm on a national level what Corfu already knows.
Sunday Coffee & Nibbles is not merely a café. It is a small, daily ritual. A space crafted with such devotion that it manages to turn every day of the week into a lazy, perfect Sunday. If you find yourself on the island, a visit here is not just a recommendation; it is your ultimate culinary priority.
