In-Depth Guide & Details

What is the Arkoudilas Trail?

The Arkoudilas Trail is an off-the-beaten-path adventure located at the very southernmost tip of Corfu. It’s not a manicured path but a network of rugged dirt tracks that cut through a dramatic, undeveloped landscape of windswept cliffs, sparse vegetation, and sweeping views of the Ionian Sea.

This trail leads to two incredible highlights: the vast and often deserted Arkoudilas Beach, a golden sandy expanse backed by towering cliffs, and the remote, clifftop Arkoudilas Monastery (a small chapel) that marks the island’s end. It’s a challenging but highly rewarding experience for those seeking solitude, raw natural beauty, and a true sense of exploration away from the tourist crowds.

The Route at a Glance & Map

The Arkoudilas Trail typically starts where the paved road ends just south of Kavos and continues along a network of rough dirt tracks. The main destinations are Arkoudilas Beach and the Arkoudilas Monastery, located at the very tip of the island. The full return hike from the end of Kavos to the monastery is roughly 6-7 kilometres (3.7-4.3 miles) and can take 2-3 hours, plus time spent at the beach. To note, Google maps may not be completely accurate and it is always worth seeking advice before any hike from local tourist information centres or well known hiking websites/apps.

Detailed Breakdown of the Hike

Starting Point: South of Kavos

  • Route Section: Transition from paved road to dirt tracks
  • Terrain: Flat asphalt road, then increasingly rough dirt tracks.
  • Highlights: Leaving the resort bustle behind, entering a wilder landscape.

The trail officially begins where the paved road ends, just south of the lively resort of Kavos. You can park your standard hire car here. From this point, you’ll embark on a journey along increasingly rugged dirt tracks. While the very first sections might still see some local vehicles or quad bikes, the path quickly becomes more isolated, setting the tone for the remote adventure ahead. Ensure you have proper footwear and all necessary supplies from this point.

Mid-Section: Coastal Tracks & Arkoudilas Beach

  • Route Section: Along the clifftops and down to the beach
  • Terrain: Uneven, stony dirt tracks with some hilly sections and steep descents to the beach.
  • Highlights: Dramatic cliff scenery, views towards Paxos, arrival at Arkoudilas Beach.

The trail winds along the dramatic clifftops, offering sweeping views of the Ionian Sea and, on clear days, the distant island of Paxos. The paths are entirely exposed to the sun, with very little natural shade, so sun protection is crucial. You’ll navigate a network of tracks; using a GPS map is highly recommended for navigation. Your first major reward is the descent to Arkoudilas Beach, a vast expanse of golden sand backed by towering clay cliffs. It’s often blissfully empty, offering a true sense of secluded paradise.

Final Destination: Arkoudilas Monastery & Southernmost Tip

  • Route Section: Further south along the cliffs
  • Terrain: Continues on rough dirt tracks, possibly narrower paths.
  • Highlights: Remote clifftop chapel, sense of reaching Corfu’s very end, profound solitude.

Beyond the main beach, the tracks continue further south towards the island’s southernmost point. Here, perched dramatically on the clifftop, you’ll discover the remote Arkoudilas Monastery (actually a small, whitewashed chapel). This isolated spot offers truly incredible, uninterrupted views across the sea, and a profound sense of solitude. It’s a perfect place for quiet contemplation before you begin your return journey along the same rugged paths back towards Kavos.
