The Corfu Trail is a monumental long-distance walking path that stretches approximately 220 kilometres (137 miles) along the entire length of the island. Established in 2001, it was brilliantly designed to avoid major tourist areas, instead guiding walkers through the diverse and often unseen landscapes of the Corfiot interior. The full trail typically takes between 10 to 15 days to complete, depending on your pace and the allure of the many hidden gems you’ll discover.
The route officially runs from south to north, beginning amongst the dramatic white cliffs of Arkoudilas in the far south and culminating at the wild, beautiful beach of Agios Spyridon on the northern coast. This journey is more than just a hike; it’s a pilgrimage for the soul, revealing the authentic rhythms of Corfu life.
The map below beautifully illustrates the full, epic route of the Corfu Trail, starting from Cape Asprokavos in the South and finishing at Agios Spyridon Beach in the North. Prepare to be inspired! To note, Google maps may not be completely accurate and it is always worth seeking advice before any hike from local tourist information centres or well known hiking websites/apps.
For many visitors, tackling the entire 220km trail in one go isn’t feasible. The great news is that the trail’s most incredible experiences can be savored in shorter, multi-day sections. We’ve highlighted three of the most rewarding and distinct sections below, each offering a unique glimpse into Corfu’s soul.
This section is a perfect, gentle introduction to the trail’s wild, natural beauty, defined by its long, flat walks and stunning coastal ecosystems. Beginning at the island’s southernmost point, the route cleverly bypasses the resort of Kavos and heads towards the ruined monastery of Arkoudilas. The path then descends to the coast, where you’ll walk along vast, windswept sands, feeling the immense power of the Ionian Sea.
Terrain: The terrain here is the most gentle on the trail, consisting of sandy tracks, long beach walks, and quiet country lanes through ancient olive groves. There is very little significant climbing, making it an excellent warm-up for what’s to come.
Highlights & Views: The main highlight is the magnificent stretch between Issos and Halikounas beaches, where you walk on a narrow spit of land with the Ionian Sea on your left and the tranquil Korission Lagoon on your right. This protected wetland is a haven for rare birdlife, including flamingos in spring, creating truly spectacular views across the vast dunes and the serene lake. The section concludes at the small seaside village of Paramonas, a perfect spot to rest and enjoy a well-deserved meal by the sea.
This central section is a captivating journey into the cultural heart of Corfu. Leaving the coast behind, it takes you through a timeless landscape of rolling hills, dense olive groves, and some of the island’s most traditional, unspoiled villages. The route largely follows historic cobbled mule tracks (kalderimi), offering an authentic glimpse into how the island was once connected, far from modern intrusions.
Terrain: This section is consistently hilly but not mountainous, providing a good physical challenge. Expect a mix of ancient cobbled paths (which can be slippery when wet), invigorating dirt tracks through fragrant forests, and some quiet road sections connecting charming villages.
Highlights & Views: The absolute must-see is the rewarding climb to Kaiser’s Throne in Pelekas. From this legendary viewpoint, you are rewarded with a stunning 360-degree panorama of the island’s lush green interior and sparkling coastline – a truly imperial vista! The trail then takes you through the heart of authentic village life in places like Sinarades and Giannades, where time seems to slow down. The final descent towards Liapades offers the first breathtaking views of the dramatic cliffs and turquoise bays of the Paleokastritsa area, a perfect teaser for the rugged beauty of the west coast.
This is the grand finale of the Corfu Trail, offering the most demanding hiking and the most spectacular, jaw-dropping rewards. The journey begins in the mountain village of Spartilas, perched high on the mountainside, and immediately begins the formidable ascent of Mount Pantokrator (906m), the island’s highest and most dominant peak. This is where your true grit will be tested! After conquering the summit and its ancient monastery, a long and incredibly scenic descent begins.
Terrain: Be prepared for steep, rocky, and exposed mountain paths on the arduous ascent and initial descent of Pantokrator. This is unequivocally the most technically challenging and physically demanding part of the entire Corfu Trail, requiring sturdy boots and a strong will. After this epic traverse, the terrain becomes gentler, following old tracks and lanes through beautiful northern valleys.
Highlights & Views: The ultimate, crowning highlight is the absolutely unparalleled 360-degree panoramic view from the summit of Mount Pantokrator. On a clear day, the vista stretches across the entire island, over to the Albanian mainland, and even as far as the distant heel of Italy – a truly unforgettable moment of triumph. The trail then descends into one of Corfu’s greatest cultural treasures: the heritage village of Old Perithia, a stunning and atmospheric collection of Venetian-era stone houses where you can enjoy a well-earned lunch in a living museum. The final leg is a beautiful and rewarding walk through the tranquil northern countryside, culminating at the serene Agios Spyridon beach, marking the triumphant completion of your epic journey.
