The Kanoni Peninsula Walk is Corfu’s most beloved coastal promenade, stretching from the charming Garitsa Bay to the iconic Kanoni viewpoint. This easy, mostly flat route offers a delightful blend of historical sights, stunning natural beauty, and the unique thrill of plane spotting.
It’s a linear walk, typically starting near Corfu Town’s Old Fortress and following the coastline south, culminating at the famous Vlacherna Monastery and Mouse Island vista, directly adjacent to Corfu’s airport runway.
The map below illustrates the approximately 2-3km (1.2-1.8 mile) one-way route (note that Google maps may not be completely accurate and it is always worth seeking advice before any hike from local tourist information centres or well known hiking websites/apps), which generally takes 30-45 minutes to complete at a leisurely pace, not including stops at Mon Repos or for plane spotting. It’s perfect for a half-day excursion, allowing ample time for photos, a coffee, or simply soaking in the views.
The walk officially begins at the southern end of Corfu Town, around Garitsa Bay. This expansive bay is lined with a wide, tree-shaded promenade, perfect for a leisurely start. As you stroll, you’ll have uninterrupted views across the water to the imposing Old Fortress and the vibrant pastel buildings of the town. A notable landmark here is the Anemomilos Windmill, a charming historical structure standing proudly at the water’s edge.
Continuing south, the path leads you past the grand entrance to the Mon Repos Estate. This historic palace, once a royal residence and the birthplace of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, is set within extensive, beautiful parklands. While the walk doesn’t take you inside the palace grounds (though you can easily detour to visit), you’ll appreciate the serene, green surroundings that line this part of the route. It’s a tranquil segment, offering shade and a sense of aristocratic history.
The grand finale of the walk brings you to Kanoni, arguably Corfu’s most famous postcard view. Here, a narrow causeway connects the mainland to the tiny, picturesque Vlacherna Monastery. Just beyond, the verdant islet of Pontikonisi, or Mouse Island, rises from the turquoise waters. This spot is also famous for its unique vantage point directly adjacent to Corfu International Airport’s runway. Prepare for the exhilarating experience of watching planes land and take off just metres above your head – a truly unforgettable and iconic Corfu moment!
