The Mount Pantokrator Summit Trail refers to the various routes that lead to the highest point on Corfu, standing majestically at 906 meters. While the summit is accessible by car, the “trail” specifically speaks to the hiking routes, offering a more immersive and challenging experience of this iconic mountain.
The most rewarding hike typically starts from the historic village of Old Perithia, ascending through rugged mountain paths, past ancient terraces, and offering progressively expansive views. The reward for your efforts is the breathtaking 360-degree panoramic vista from the summit, encompassing the entire island, the Albanian coastline, and even parts of Italy on a clear day. At the top, you’ll also find the historic Pantokrator Monastery, adding a cultural dimension to your achievement.
There are several trails leading to the summit of Mount Pantokrator, varying in length and difficulty. The most popular and rewarding long-distance hike begins in Old Perithia. This route is approximately 8-10 km (5-6 miles) return, with a significant elevation gain, and typically takes 4-6 hours. Other shorter, but still challenging, routes can start from villages higher up the mountain road. To note, Google maps may not be completely accurate and it is always worth seeking advice before any hike from local tourist information centres or well known hiking websites/apps.
The most popular and rewarding full hike to the summit begins in the atmospheric Old Perithia. From the village, well-trodden (but rugged) paths, sometimes marked, lead you uphill. You’ll traverse ancient donkey trails and shepherd’s paths, steadily gaining elevation. It’s essential to wear sturdy hiking boots for this section due to the uneven and often loose terrain. Ensure you carry sufficient water and snacks, as facilities quickly disappear once you leave the village.
The ascent continues through classic Corfiot mountain landscapes, characterized by scrubland, olive groves, and wild herbs. The path can be challenging, with sections that require careful footing. As you climb higher, the views become truly spectacular, offering sweeping panoramas of the entire island, the Ionian Sea, and the Albanian mainland. You may encounter goats along the way. Be prepared for potentially strong winds and cooler temperatures as you gain altitude, even on a hot day.
Upon reaching the summit, you’ll find the Pantokrator Monastery (a small, active monastery) and a large telecommunications mast. The monastery is open to visitors (respectful attire required) and often has a small shop and café for refreshments. The true highlight is the 360-degree panoramic view from this vantage point. From here, you can gaze across all of Corfu, see the Albanian coastline, and on exceptionally clear days, spot the distant heel of Italy. After taking in the views, you’ll follow the same route back down to Old Perithia.
