Perched high on a headland on Corfu’s northwest coast, Afionas is a picture-perfect traditional village, renowned for offering one of the most spectacular sunsets on the island. Location

Afionas is situated in the northwest of Corfu, overlooking the bay of Agios Georgios Pagon. It’s located approximately 35 km from Corfu Town. The village itself is a protected settlement, with the main access road stopping at its entrance. It serves as the gateway to the legendary Porto Timoni double beach. The scenic drive from Corfu Town takes around 50 minutes, culminating in a final, winding ascent to the village.

• Porto Timoni Beach: The jewel of the area. A breathtaking twin bay with turquoise waters, accessible via a steep, rocky footpath from the village. It’s a must-see, but requires effort to reach.
• The Sunset Viewpoints: Afionas is famous for its sunsets. Several tavernas and a dedicated viewpoint at the top of the village offer front-row seats to this unforgettable daily spectacle.

These are the main draw. You won’t find large supermarkets or bustling shops; instead, there are a few small, charming gift shops. Accommodation is primarily boutique guesthouses, private villas, and traditional rooms to let, perfect for a romantic and peaceful stay.

Getting There – Parking, Accessibility & Transport

• Parking: There is a small car park at the village entrance which fills up very early and also another in the centre. A lot of visitors park along the road leading up to the village and walk up. In high season, especially around sunset, it can be extremely congested.
• Accessibility: The village itself has uneven cobbled paths. The hike to Porto Timoni is steep, rocky, and not suitable for those with mobility issues, young children, or anyone without sturdy footwear.
• Transport: While a the A7 bus route serves the nearby resort of Agios Georgios Pagon, renting a car is essential for reaching Afionas itself and having the flexibility to explore the wider area.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Visiting

• The Hike to Porto Timoni: Do not underestimate the walk. It takes around 30 minutes down and is a challenging climb back up, especially in the heat. Bring water and wear trainers or hiking shoes, not flip-flops.
• Sunset Crowds: The village becomes extremely popular and crowded in the hour before sunset during summer. To get a good spot at a taverna, arrive early.
• Plan Your Parking: Arrive well before you plan to eat or hike to allow time to find parking and walk into the village.
• It’s a Viewing Point: Remember, the village is on a cliff. The nearest easily accessible beach (Agios Georgios Pagon) is a short drive away.
