Ano Korakiana Village

Ano Korakiana Village

Overview

Ano Korakiana is one of the oldest, largest, and most culturally rich villages in Corfu. Sprawling across the foothills of the mountains of central Corfu, this is a village of profound history and character. Famed for its staggering number of churches (sources claim up to 37), its labyrinth of narrow, winding *kantounia* (alleyways), and its proud musical heritage—being home to one of the island’s oldest philharmonic bands—Ano Korakiana offers a deep dive into authentic island life. It’s a destination for culture lovers, historians, and explorers eager to lose themselves in a living, breathing Corfiot community.

Location

Ano Korakiana is located in the central-northern part of the island, inland from the coastal resorts of Dassia and Ipsos. It is built amphitheatrically on a hillside, offering lovely views over the island’s interior. The village is approximately 17 km from Corfu Town. The drive from the capital is straightforward and scenic, taking around 30 minutes.

Key Attractions & Features

  • The Labyrinth of Churches: The village’s most famous feature is its sheer number of churches and chapels, woven into the fabric of the community. Exploring the alleyways to discover them is a unique experience.
  • “Spyros Samaras” Philharmonic Band: Ano Korakiana has a deep musical tradition and is home to one of Corfu’s most historic philharmonic societies. The band is a source of immense local pride.
  • Venetian Architecture: Wander the village to discover two-storey stone houses, characteristic arches, and cobbled paths that evoke centuries of history.
  • Aristidis Metallinos Sculpture Gallery: The village hosts a small but fascinating gallery dedicated to the work of the local self-taught sculptor, offering a unique insight into local art.

Amenities

As a large, year-round residential village, Ano Korakiana has a good selection of amenities for daily life. You’ll find several traditional kafeneia, a handful of tavernas serving local food, bakeries, and mini-markets. The amenities serve the local community rather than tourists, which is part of its charm. For a full range of tourist services, the coast at Dassia or Ipsos is a 10-15 minute drive away.

Getting There – Parking, Accessibility & Transport

  • Parking: A car park is available near the square, but parking within the historic core is impossible.
  • Accessibility: The village is built on a steep hillside. Exploring it involves climbing many steps and navigating narrow, uneven cobbled lanes. It is not suitable for those with mobility challenges.
  • Transport: Ano Korakiana is well-served by the A2 Bus route from Corfu Town. However, a rental car provides the best flexibility for exploring the surrounding countryside and nearby villages.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Visiting

  • Get Lost and Explore: The best way to see Ano Korakiana is to simply wander and let the maze of alleyways reveal its secrets. Don’t worry about a map.
  • It’s a Real Community: This is a vibrant, living village. Be respectful of residents’ privacy, keep noise levels down, and greet people with a friendly “Yassas.”
  • Wear Comfortable Shoes: You will be doing a lot of walking on steep and uneven surfaces. Good footwear is essential.
  • Allow Plenty of Time: This is not a village to be rushed. To truly appreciate its atmosphere and discover its hidden corners, allow at least a few hours for your visit.
