Chlomos Village

Chlomos Village

Overview

Chlomos Village is a magnificent and historic village, often referred to as the “balcony of Corfu” due to its spectacular panoramic position high on the slopes of Mount Stavros. It is one of the island’s oldest and most authentic settlements, offering breathtaking 360-degree views of both the Ionian and Adriatic Seas, stretching from the south of Corfu all the way to Albania. Chlomos provides a true escape into traditional Corfiot life, with its charming stone houses, narrow winding streets, and a serene atmosphere that feels untouched by time.

Location

Chlomos is uniquely situated in the southern part of Corfu, perched atop a prominent hill approximately 28 km from Corfu Town and the airport. Its elevated position offers unparalleled views and a cooling breeze, even in summer. The village is accessible via a steep, winding road that provides increasingly dramatic vistas as you ascend. The drive from Corfu Town typically takes around 40-50 minutes, making it a perfect day trip for those exploring the south.

Key Attractions & Features

  • Panoramic Views: The primary draw. From various points in the village, especially near the church and the small squares, you are treated to jaw-dropping vistas that encompass most of southern Corfu and beyond.
  • Traditional Architecture: Explore the well-preserved stone houses, narrow, car-free alleyways, and the central village square (plateia) that exude old-world charm.
  • Agios Demetrios Church: The village’s main church, standing proudly at one of the highest points, often acts as a landmark and a great viewpoint.
  • Authentic Tavernas: A few traditional tavernas offer genuine Corfiot cuisine, often with outdoor seating that maximises the incredible views.
  • Peaceful Atmosphere: Experience a profound sense of tranquility away from the coastal hustle. This is a place to unwind, breathe, and appreciate the slower pace of Greek village life.

Amenities

Amenities in Chlomos are minimal and designed to serve the local community, enhancing its authentic feel. You’ll find a couple of traditional tavernas or kafenions (coffee houses) where locals gather. There may be a very small mini-market for basic essentials, but no large supermarkets or extensive shopping. Accommodation is very limited, usually to a handful of private villas or rooms for rent, making it ideal for those seeking seclusion and a truly local experience.

Getting There – Parking, Accessibility & Transport

  • Parking: There is a small public parking area at the entrance of the village. As it’s a small, traditional village, parking can be tight, especially near the central areas.
  • Accessibility: The village is built on a steep hillside, with very narrow, uneven, and cobbled streets and numerous steps. It is not suitable for those with significant mobility issues or pushchairs. Sturdy walking shoes are highly recommended.
  • Transport: Chlomos is not directly served by public bus routes. Renting a car is absolutely essential for reaching Chlomos and exploring the surrounding area.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Visiting

  • Car is Essential: Without a car, visiting Chlomos is very difficult. The winding, uphill roads require confident driving.
  • No Beach: Chlomos is an inland, mountain village. The nearest beaches (e.g., Messonghi, Boukari) are a drive away.
  • Quiet Retreat: This is a destination for peace and quiet. There is no nightlife, and the evenings are spent enjoying traditional food and the stunning views.
  • Walkable but Hilly: Be prepared for uphill and downhill walks on uneven surfaces within the village.

Final Verdict

  • Best for: Couples, photographers, and independent travellers seeking authentic Greek village life, unparalleled panoramic views, and a truly tranquil escape in southern Corfu.
  • Best time to go: Spring (April-May) and Autumn (September-October) for pleasant temperatures, clear views, and fewer visitors. Summer (July-August) offers warm evenings for dining with a view, but can be hot for exploring.
  • Crowds: Chlomos remains largely uncrowded, even in peak season, offering a genuinely peaceful experience. It’s visited more as a viewpoint than a bustling resort.
  • Extra perks: The ‘balcony of Corfu’ views, incredibly authentic atmosphere, and a taste of traditional island life away from the tourist trail.
