Episkepsi Village

Episkepsi Village

Overview

Nestled on the verdant northern slopes of Mount Pantokrator, Episkepsi is one of Corfu’s largest and most authentic traditional villages. Unlike the coastal resorts, Episkepsi is a year-round working community, offering a genuine glimpse into real Corfiot life. Characterised by its handsome stone houses, numerous churches, and a strong community spirit—it even has its own philharmonic band—the village is surrounded by ancient olive groves. It is a destination for travellers seeking authenticity, tranquillity, and a connection to the island’s rich cultural heritage, far from the summer crowds.

Location

Episkepsi is located in the north of Corfu, sitting at an elevation of around 200 metres. It is situated inland, a short drive from the coastal resorts of Acharavi and Roda. The village is approximately 35 km from Corfu Town. The scenic drive from the capital takes around one hour, winding through lush landscapes and offering beautiful views up towards the mountains and down to the sea.

Key Attractions & Features

  • Authentic Village Life: The main attraction is the village itself. Wander the streets to discover traditional kafeneia (coffee shops), hidden squares, and the rhythm of local daily life.
  • Churches and Architecture: Episkepsi has a remarkable number of churches for its size. The prominent church of Agios Vasileios stands in the main square, and many smaller chapels are dotted throughout the village and surrounding countryside.
  • The Philharmonic Band: Episkepsi is home to a proud and active philharmonic band, a cornerstone of Corfiot culture. If you’re lucky, you might hear them practising or performing during local festivals.
  • Hiking and Nature: The village is a fantastic starting point for walkers. Trails and country roads lead through a landscape of ancient olive trees, offering stunning views over the northern coastline and towards the mountains of Albania.

Amenities

As a living village, amenities in Episkepsi cater to its residents. You will find several traditional kafeneia, a couple of family-run tavernas serving local cuisine, a bakery, and a mini-market for essentials. The focus is on authenticity, not tourism. For a wider selection of shops, restaurants, and services, the bustling resort of Acharavi is just a 10-minute drive away.

Getting There – Parking, Accessibility & Transport

  • Parking: Parking is available along the main road that runs through the village and in small designated areas or squares. Be mindful not to block residents’ driveways or narrow streets.
  • Accessibility: The village is built on a hillside, so expect some steep inclines and steps. The main roads are accessible, but exploring the older, narrower lanes requires navigating uneven surfaces.
  • Transport: The A15 bus route passes by the village. However, renting a car is highly recommended for ease of access and to explore the beautiful surrounding region, including Mount Pantokrator and Old Perithia.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Visiting

  • It’s a Residential Village: This is a real, working community. Visitors are welcome but should be quiet and respectful, especially when walking near homes and churches.
  • A Place for Peace: Come to Episkepsi to slow down and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. It is not a place for nightlife or tourist-centric entertainment.
  • Explore on Foot: The best way to experience the village’s charm is to park your car and take a leisurely stroll through its winding lanes.
  • Combine Your Visit: A trip to Episkepsi can easily be combined with a visit to the nearby resort of Acharavi, the historic abandoned village of Old Perithia, or a drive up Mount Pantokrator.
