Lakones Village

Lakones Village

Overview

Lakones Village is a truly spectacular traditional village perched high on the slopes of Mount Araklis, offering arguably the most iconic panoramic views of Paleokastritsa’s famed bays below. It’s often referred to as the “Balcony of Paleokastritsa” due to its elevated position which provides a mesmerising vista of the turquoise coves, rugged coastline, and the sprawling olive groves. Lakones exudes an authentic, old-world charm, with its narrow, winding streets and traditional stone houses. It’s a serene escape for those seeking breathtaking natural beauty, photographic opportunities, and a taste of genuine Corfiot mountain village life.

Location

Lakones is strategically situated on Corfu’s central-west coast, directly above the famous resort of Paleokastritsa and approximately 25 km from Corfu Town and the airport. The village clings to the hillside, accessible via a winding, steep road that offers increasingly dramatic views as you ascend. Its elevated position ensures cooler breezes and magnificent panoramas. The drive from Corfu Town typically takes around 40 minutes.

Key Attractions & Features

  • Bella Vista Viewpoint: This is the highlight. A designated viewpoint (and several tavernas) offering truly breathtaking, postcard-perfect panoramas over Paleokastritsa’s bays and the surrounding coastline. It’s one of Corfu’s most famous photo spots.
  • Traditional Village Core: Explore the charming, car-free heart of Lakones with its incredibly narrow, winding alleyways, old stone houses, and small, authentic squares.
  • Authentic Tavernas & Cafes: Enjoy genuine Corfiot hospitality and local cuisine at the village’s traditional tavernas, many of which are situated to take full advantage of the stunning views.
  • Hiking & Nature Walks: The village is surrounded by ancient olive groves and offers access to various walking paths, including routes that descend to Paleokastritsa or explore the wider hillside.
  • Charming Shops: A few small shops sell local products, olive wood carvings, and souvenirs, adding to the village’s quaint appeal.

Amenities

Amenities in Lakones are simple and traditional, focusing on local charm rather than extensive tourist facilities. The main offerings are the authentic tavernas and a few small cafes, many capitalising on the magnificent views. You’ll find a couple of mini-markets for basic essentials, but no large supermarkets. Accommodation is limited, consisting primarily of private villas for rent, charming traditional guesthouses, and apartments, offering a peaceful and secluded stay.

Getting There – Parking, Accessibility & Transport

  • Parking: Parking in Lakones, especially near the Bella Vista viewpoint, can be very challenging during peak season and at sunset. There are limited designated parking spots, and it often requires parking along the narrow approach road.
  • Accessibility: The village is built on a steep hillside, with very narrow, uneven, and often cobbled streets and many steps. It is not suitable for those with significant mobility issues or pushchairs. Sturdy walking shoes are essential.
  • Transport: Lakones is not directly served by frequent public bus routes. While the A9 Green Bus goes to Paleokastritsa, reaching Lakones from there is a significant uphill walk or requires a taxi. Renting a car is highly recommended for ultimate convenience and to truly explore this beautiful area.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Visiting

  • Views are Key: The main draw of Lakones is its incredible views. Plan your visit around a meal with a view or simply to soak in the panorama.
  • Hilly Terrain: Be prepared for significant uphill and downhill walking within the village.
  • Sunset Popularity: Like other west coast viewpoints, Lakones gets very busy around sunset. Arrive well in advance if you want a prime spot at a taverna.
  • Authentic & Quiet: This is a traditional mountain village. Do not expect resort-style amenities or lively nightlife. It’s a place for peace and genuine Corfiot charm.

Final Verdict

  • Best for: Photographers, couples, hikers, and independent travellers seeking breathtaking panoramic views, authentic Greek village life, and a tranquil escape high above the coast.
  • Best time to go: Spring (April-May) and Autumn (September-October) for pleasant temperatures for walking and clearer views. July and August for the most vibrant sunset atmosphere (be prepared for crowds).
  • Crowds: The viewpoints can be very busy at sunset, but the inner village generally remains calm and authentic.
  • Extra perks: Unforgettable ‘Bella Vista’ views, a true glimpse into traditional Corfiot mountain life, and a great base for exploring the area.
