Pagoi Village

Pagoi Village

Overview

Set in the rolling green hills of northwest Corfu, Pagoi is a sleepy, traditional village with a unique claim to international fame. This charming, authentic village, with its narrow lanes and central square, was a key filming location for the heart-pounding car chase in the 1981 James Bond film, *For Your Eyes Only*. Today, it remains a peaceful, working village, largely untouched by the tourism of the nearby coast. A visit to Pagoi offers a glimpse into authentic Corfiot life, stunning valley views, and a fun photo opportunity for film buffs, all while serving as the gateway to the magnificent beach of Agios Georgios Pagon.

Location

Pagoi is situated in the northwest of the island, perched on a hillside overlooking the valley that leads down to the vast bay of Agios Georgios Pagon. It is located approximately 32 km from Corfu Town. The main road to the beach runs directly through the village. The scenic drive from Corfu Town takes around 50 minutes, culminating in the famous winding descent through olive groves that was immortalized on film.

Key Attractions & Features

  • The “James Bond” Connection: Pagoi’s star feature. The village was the setting for the memorable car chase in *For Your Eyes Only*, where Roger Moore’s Bond and Carole Bouquet’s Melina Havelock career through the narrow streets in a humble Citroën 2CV.
  • Authentic Village Square: The heart of the village is its small, traditional plateia (square), home to a church and a couple of classic kafeneia. It’s the perfect spot to stop for a Greek coffee and soak up the local atmosphere.
  • Gateway to Agios Georgios Pagon: The main road to this spectacular beach passes directly through Pagoi, making the village an unmissable part of the journey. Many visitors stop to explore before or after a day at the sea.
  • Scenic Views: From various points in and around the village, you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views across the lush valley and its ancient olive groves, a classic Corfiot landscape.

Amenities

Amenities in Pagoi are modest and authentic, catering primarily to the local community. You’ll find a couple of traditional kafeneia/tavernas in the village square and a mini-market for basic supplies. For a comprehensive selection of restaurants, beach bars, water sports, and shops, the resort of Agios Georgios Pagon at the bottom of the hill has everything you could need.

Getting There – Parking, Accessibility & Transport

  • Parking: Parking is limited and informal. Visitors can usually find a spot in the main square or along the wider sections of the road passing through the village. Be careful not to block traffic on the narrow streets.
  • Accessibility: The village is built on a slope, with some steep and narrow lanes. The main square is easily accessible from the road.
  • Transport: The A7 bus route to Agios Georgios Pagon passes through the village. However, to truly explore the area and enjoy the famous drive, renting a car is the ideal option.

Things to Keep in Mind Before Visiting

  • Drive with Care: The roads are exactly as winding and narrow as they appear in the film! Take your time, especially on the hairpin turns descending towards the beach.
  • A Quick but Charming Stop: Pagoi is best enjoyed as a short stop on the way to the beach or as part of a scenic drive, rather than as a destination for a full day out.
  • Combine with the Beach: The perfect way to experience the area is to drive through the village, re-enacting the Bond scene in your mind, and then spend the rest of the day relaxing at Agios Georgios Pagon beach.
  • Photo Opportunity: Don’t miss the chance to take a photo in the spot where the iconic 2CV tumbled over and landed back on its wheels.

Final Verdict

  • Best for: James Bond fans, lovers of authentic Greek villages, and anyone travelling to or from Agios Georgios Pagon beach.
  • Best time to go: Any time during the main season (May-October). The drive is beautiful year-round, but a visit is best paired with a day at the beach.
  • Crowds: The village itself is rarely crowded, though the main road can be busy with traffic heading to the beach in July and August.
  • Extra perks: The unique thrill of visiting a real-life movie location and experiencing one of the most scenic drives in Corfu.
