An Overview of Pelekas Village

Pelekas is a picturesque and traditional village perched majestically on one of Corfu’s highest hillsides on the west coast. Often referred to as “Kaiser’s Throne” due to its legendary viewpoint, Pelekas offers unparalleled panoramic vistas that stretch across the entire island. It’s a place where traditional Corfiot life meets breathtaking natural beauty, famous worldwide for its golden sunsets. Pelekas is ideal for those seeking authentic charm, stunning photographic opportunities, and easy access to some of Corfu’s most beloved sandy beaches.

Location & Getting There

Pelekas is strategically located in west-central Corfu, approximately 13 km west of Corfu Town and the airport. The village itself is built on a prominent hill, with narrow, winding streets. The drive from Corfu Town is relatively short, taking around 20-30 minutes, with the final ascent providing stunning previews of the view to come.

Transport & Parking

  • By Car: Renting a car is highly recommended for flexibility. Parking in Pelekas can be challenging, especially in the central village and near Kaiser’s Throne at sunset. There is a main car park on the outskirts, but spaces fill up quickly. Arrive early.
  • By Bus: Pelekas is served by the No. 11 Blue Bus service, which connects it with Corfu Town.
  • Accessibility: Be aware that the village is built on a steep hill, with many narrow, cobbled streets and steps. It is not ideal for those with significant mobility issues. Comfortable walking shoes are essential.

Key Attractions & Features

  • Kaiser’s Throne Viewpoint: The most iconic spot, an observatory where Kaiser Wilhelm II admired the 360-degree vistas. It is widely considered the best sunset viewpoint on Corfu. Insider Tip: Arrive at least an hour before sunset in summer to get a good spot.
  • The Traditional Village: Explore the charming, car-free heart of the village with its narrow, winding alleys, traditional stone houses, and welcoming squares.
  • Nearby Sandy Beaches: Pelekas is a short but steep drive from some of Corfu’s finest sandy beaches, including Kontogialos (Pelekas Beach) directly below, and the popular Glyfada and Myrtiotissa beaches.
  • Sunset Tavernas: Several tavernas and cafes are strategically positioned to offer incredible sunset views while enjoying authentic Corfiot cuisine.
